Does anyone else love the feeling of clearing out the clutter after the holidays are over? It just feels good to start the new year fresh! Whether you’re cleaning things out to move in the coming year or just to create some extra space, decluttering and organizing everything can be quite overwhelming. Here are our top 5 tips to organize your home.
1. Focus on One Space at a Time
If there are several areas in your home you’d like to tackle, start with one. If you look at the project in its entirety, it can be seem daunting. It doesn’t matter which space! Whether you start with the area that is the biggest so you don’t lose steam or the smallest section to get in the groove, select it and then stick with it. Then, after you complete the area, have a short celebration and then move onto the next!
2. Allow Plenty of Time
Go into this project with an open mind and a realistic timeline. Decluttering isn’t always an instant gratification process. Many times when the area feels even messier, you know you’re making progress! Take it step by step and try dedicating a couple of hours each day until you finish.
3. Find Everything a Place
A place for everything, everything in its place. As the old quote from Benjamin Franklin suggests, go through everything and make sure it has a designated spot. Does the item make sense in this space? You wouldn’t put your blender in the bathroom! Put items you regularly use together, near each other. This will eliminate the urge to leave something sitting out on the counter and become clutter.
4. Look for Wasted Space
When beginning to rearrange the space look for ways to gain more usable space. Do you have a tall ceiling in your closet? Try adding a shelf. Don’t forget to take a closer look at the space under your bed. Adding storage bins is a great way to maximize space!
5. Visibility & Accessibility
You don’t have to overspend to organize your space. Sure, having all of the bins and baskets look the same might look pretty but more importantly it needs to be functional. A great way to do this is being intentional as you’re organizing. Accessibility and visibility are key. Put items you don’t need to go to as often on a higher shelf. Do you have a hard time finding things? Try clear storage bins. Hate digging back in the back of the cabinet for something? Add slide-out drawer organizers or a lazy susan.
